TUMMY TUCK

TUMMY TUCK

Pregnacy and weight loss are two main reasons for abdominal bulge, lax skin, stretch marks, and excess fat. Exercise and diet cannot sufficiently resolve these changes.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is the surgical process by which the excess skin on the lower abdominal area is removed and separated abdominal muscles are repaired. Waistline definition can be enhanced by adjunct procedures such as liposuction. A through understanding of the anatomy and an aesthetic vision is required to achieve a beautiful result.

How do I prepare for a Tummy Tuck Surgery?

As a rule, safety and aesthetics are maximized when you undertake a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle choices along with a regimen of exercise and strength training before any tummy tuck and body contouring procedure. It is then possible to obtain a firm, flattened, contour. In general, Dr. Unal uses body mass index (BMI, a metric that estimates body fat and safety profiles based on height and weight) to assist in the determination of candidacy for surgery. When an ideal BMI is reached at or below 25 kg/m2 both safety and anticipated cosmetic results are maximal, at a BMI above 27.5 kg/m2, the risks of both surgery and anaesthesia increase.

The best tummy tuck results can be achieved when you are at, or close to an ideal body weight.
A comfortable, sustainable weight plateau that can be maintained with a balanced diet and regular, moderate exercise, and this is the best point at which an abdominoplasty is safest. The best tummy tuck candidates will have one or more of the below:

  • Excess skin of the abdominal region
  • Regional excess fat of the anterior abdomen and flanks
  • Weak or bulging abdominal muscles
  • Diastasis recti (midline separation of the abdominal muscles)
  • A body weight within 10% of ideal, or BMI below 27.5

A tummy tuck procedure will remove excess skin, and fat tissue by direct excision and liposuction techniques, firm and flatten abdominal muscle contour. The degree of skin excess, fat, and bulge will differ in every individual, therefore a variety of techniques can be used for their correction:

  • Mini abdominoplasty - a mini tummy tuck treats the excess fat and skin below the belly button, and above the pubic area, and is ideal for isolated excess in this region
  • Modified abdominoplasty - a modified tummy tuck corrects both limited anterior skin and fat excess as well as the entire diastasis of the muscles
  • Classical abdominoplasty - a full tummy tuck can remove more significant skin and regional fat excess, repairs diastasis of abdominal muscles, and rejuvenates and "re-insets" the belly button
  • Lipoabdominoplasty - tummy tuck in conjunction with liposuction, which provides for additional regional contouring (including flanks, hips and waistline) as well as improved shaping and sculpting of the midline abdominal contour

Frequently asked Questions

Does a tummy tuck get rid of excess fat?

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, removes excess skin and excess fat, and most often enables the repair of abdominal muscle bulge or separation of muscles.

Can I get liposuction at the same time as a tummy tuck?

Yes. Also known as lipoabdominoplasty, liposuction is often used in conjunction with a tummy tuck remove excess fat in the waist line and flanks.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Women that have one or more of the following are ideal candidates for tummy tuck: diastasis recti (abdominal muscle bulge), excess abdominal skin, excess abdominal fat.

What are the main types of tummy tucks

The three main types of tummy tuck are mini-abdominoplasty, modified abdominoplasty, and classical or full abdominoplasty.

Should I get a "full" or "mini" tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is appropriate for women with a small amount of skin/fat excess localized above the pubic area and below the belly button only. Those with more diffuse skin excess, fat excess, and abdominal muscle diastasis more often require a full abdominoplasty.

Where will my scar be?

The scar is transversely oriented, above the pubic region, and progresses to each hip bone. There is most often an incision within the belly button as well. The scars will be planned so that they are hidden under the bikini or underwear.

When can I return to work?

Return to work is most often between 10 and 14 days following a full tummy tuck. For those who do not require a muscle repair, return to work is after approximately 7 days.

What does a tummy tuck procedure consist of?

Most abdominoplasty procedures utilize a horizontal incision above the pubic line that is made only as long as the skin-excess requires, generally within the confines of the hip bones. The position of the resulting incision is maintained as low as possible, and most can easily cover it with regular underwear or a bikini. The length of the scar depends on the amount of skin excess. When a mini tummy tuck is performed, the excess skin and fat above the pubic region and of the lower tummy is removed. When diastasis recti and more pronounced skin and fat excess are present, abdominal wall musculature repair is performed through this incision. If a hernia is present, hernia repair is performed.. When excess skin is mild or moderate, a modified abdominoplasty is performed, with no incision around the belly button, repair of the diastazis recti and removal of excess skin is done. With moderate and severe excess, a classical tummy tuck procedure involves resetting the umbilicus, muscle tightening and skin ecess removal. Dr. Unal performs liposuction with tummy tuck in many cases to maximize the aesthetic outcome.
